India-Canada Ties Reboot

India and Canada reaffirm commitment to reviving bilateral ties, focusing on rebuilding diplomatic and strategic cooperation.

Canadian provinces and Indian states were also recognized for playing vital roles in fostering economic ties. Both countries agreed to increase collaboration on climate action, environmental protection, and conservation, as well as science and technology, including civil nuclear cooperation, AI, and digital infrastructure.

The ministers agreed that people-to-people linkages are central to strengthening mutual understanding and collaboration. Plans were laid out to boost cooperation in education, tourism, cultural exchange, and professional mobility. Early steps include revitalizing the Joint Working Group on Higher Education and expanding Canadian academic presence in India through overseas campuses.

Jaishankar underscored the shared commitment to global issues such as effective multilateralism, climate action, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Agenda 2030. He noted India and Canada’s converging interests in the Indo-Pacific region and their role in de-risking the international economy by forging strong, diverse partnerships.

The visit follows the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, where both leaders expressed intent to reset bilateral ties after recent strains. This engagement was followed by the appointment of new High Commissioners — Christopher Cooter as Canada’s envoy to New Delhi and Dinesh K. Patnaik as India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa.

Jaishankar concluded, “Your visit, Minister Anand, affords an opportunity to review the global scenario and exchange perspectives. Our responsibility as foreign ministers is to shepherd the process of rebuilding our cooperation and to ensure that it delivers on the expectations of our prime ministers and the interests of our people.”

Anand and Jaishankar pledged to work closely to implement the agreed roadmap and take India-Canada relations to new heights.
