“Mobilising Diaspora for India’s Growth”

In an era where nations increasingly draw strength from their global communities, few diasporas match the scale, reach, and influence of India’s. In this wide-ranging conversation, Dr Thomas Abraham, Chairman of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), reflects on how the Indian Diaspora has evolved into a strategic global asset and how its economic power, professional expertise, and cultural influence can be more meaningfully aligned with India’s long-term development and global leadership. He is in conversation with Editor Sayantan Chakravarty.

In your view, how does the Diaspora contribute to India’s soft power globally?

The cultural influence of the Indian Diaspora is both subtle and profound. Indian festivals, cuisine, yoga, Ayurveda, cinema, and classical arts have entered the global mainstream largely through Diaspora initiatives. These cultural expressions humanise India’s global presence and create familiarity and goodwill at the grassroots level.

At the same time, the growing number of Indian-origin elected officials and policy influencers has strengthened India’s political soft power. As India assumes greater leadership roles in global forums such as the G20 and advances its credentials in climate diplomacy and digital innovation, the Diaspora amplifies these achievements by shaping narratives and relationships in their countries of residence.

Where do you see the most promising opportunities for deeper India–Diaspora collaboration?

The opportunities are vast, but what is needed is greater coherence and structure. In the economic sphere, there is scope to unlock far more Diaspora investment by simplifying procedures, ensuring regulatory predictability, and fostering entrepreneurship through co-innovation and mentorship platforms.

In technology and research, the Diaspora’s strong presence in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, clean energy, and advanced materials presents a major opportunity. By creating systematic channels for collaboration between Diaspora experts and Indian institutions, India can accelerate innovation and narrow global technology gaps.

Philanthropy, too, holds enormous potential, particularly in education, healthcare, and skill development. With clearer regulatory pathways and greater transparency, Diaspora giving can achieve far greater scale and impact. Political engagement and youth-focused initiatives further strengthen these ties by ensuring that the relationship remains dynamic and intergenerational.

Finally, what is GOPIO’s long-term vision for India–Diaspora relations?

GOPIO believes that India–Diaspora engagement must move beyond symbolic gestures toward a structured and strategic partnership. This requires a comprehensive Diaspora policy that integrates economic, educational, technological, and diplomatic objectives rather than treating them in isolation.

Regular consultative mechanisms involving central and state governments and global Diaspora leaders can ensure continuity and trust. Equally important is the creation of transparent platforms that connect Diaspora expertise with Indian startups, research institutions, and social initiatives. At the grassroots level, sustained attention to the welfare of vulnerable migrant communities remains essential.

The Indian Diaspora is one of India’s greatest global assets. If mobilised with clarity, inclusiveness, and long-term vision, it can play a defining role in shaping India’s future as a confident, innovative, and globally engaged nation.
