Diaspora Welcomes Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands in May blended diplomacy, business, technology and cultural outreach, as the Indian diaspora accorded him an emotional welcome while both nations moved to deepen their rapidly expanding strategic partnership.

Officials accompanying the Prime Minister stressed that India–Netherlands ties have evolved significantly in recent years, moving well beyond conventional trade relations into advanced strategic sectors. During a special media briefing in New Delhi before the visit, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr Sibi George, stated that bilateral cooperation had expanded strongly in traditional sectors such as trade and investment, as well as in priority areas referred to as WAH — water, agriculture and health. According to officials, cooperation has also widened into semiconductors, renewable energy, defence, maritime security, digital innovation, education, climate action and resilient supply chains.

The Netherlands remains one of India’s most important economic partners in Europe. Bilateral trade between the two countries has crossed 28 billion euros, while the Netherlands continues to rank among the largest foreign investors in India. Rotterdam, one of Europe’s busiest ports, also serves as a major gateway for Indian exports entering the European market.

The visit also highlighted the growing people-to-people relationship between the two nations. The Netherlands is home to more than 90,000 Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin, in addition to a large Suriname-Hindustani community numbering over 200,000 people whose ancestral roots trace back to India. Around 3,500 Indian students are currently pursuing higher education in Dutch universities.

Community members said the Indian presence in the Netherlands has become increasingly visible and influential over the past decade, mirroring India’s rising diplomatic and economic profile globally.

PM Modi’s visit to the Netherlands, his second after an earlier visit in 2017, is expected to impart fresh momentum to the bilateral partnership at a time when India and Europe are seeking deeper cooperation in trade, technology, sustainability and strategic affairs.

With cultural performances, diaspora enthusiasm and high-level diplomatic engagement unfolding side by side, the visit reflected how India’s global partnerships are increasingly being strengthened not only through governments and commerce, but also through thriving overseas Indian communities that continue to act as enduring bridges between nations.
