“Opportunities Await Indian Business”

As India and Cuba celebrate 66 years of diplomatic relations, the relationship is entering a new phase. While political ties have remained consistently warm since the days of Jawaharlal Nehru and Fidel Castro, Cuba now wants to elevate economic cooperation to the same level. In an exclusive interview with India Empire’s Editor-in-Chief Sayantan Chakravarty, H.E. Juan Carlos Marsán Aguilera, Ambassador of Cuba to India, reflects on the historic bond between the two nations and outlines opportunities for Indian businesses in biotechnology, renewable energy, agriculture, tourism and advanced manufacturing.

You also highlighted the Havana International Trade Fair. Why should Indian companies participate?

The Havana International Trade Fair is much more than an exhibition. It brings together ministers, government agencies, investors and companies from across Latin America and the Caribbean. It provides direct access not only to Cuba but also to an entire regional market.

Cuba’s strategic location makes it an ideal gateway into the Caribbean and Latin America. For Indian businesses seeking regional expansion, the fair offers an excellent platform for networking and investment.

You recently participated in India Empire’s LAC FIRST conference. How valuable are such initiatives?

They are extremely valuable. LAC FIRST brought together businesses, diplomats and entrepreneurs who may not otherwise have had an opportunity to interact. I had several productive business meetings following my presentation, and many companies have already contacted our Embassy to explore partnerships.

Such initiatives help reduce information gaps and encourage practical business engagement. I sincerely hope they continue because they create lasting connections between India and Latin America.

Finally, what message would you like to give Indian businesses?

I would encourage Indian companies to look beyond geographical distance. Latin America and the Caribbean offer enormous opportunities, and Cuba is ready to become a trusted partner.

Our relationship with India has stood the test of time. Now is the moment to transform that historic friendship into a dynamic economic partnership driven by innovation, investment and shared development. We are not simply looking for buyers and sellers. We are looking for long-term partners who wish to grow with Cuba.
