SEATTLE CONVERSATION

The recollection followed an introduction in which the host conveyed messages from civil servants who had remembered Mr Nadella’s father as a humble, humane and affectionate mentor. They had asked that their appreciation be conveyed after learning that his son would attend the gathering.

Mr Nadella, too, spoke of his father’s influence, recalling his own early interest in development economics and the question of how technological progress could translate into prosperity for a larger number of countries. His father, he said, repeatedly examined the benefits generated by technological revolutions and questioned why more countries had not completed the journey towards becoming developed economies.

That question, Mr Nadella suggested, remained relevant to his thinking about artificial intelligence. He described the ambition of building technology whose benefits could be distributed widely enough to help countries advance and participate more fully in economic development.

The personal recollections formed part of a wider conversation about what technology leaders owe to the communities and countries that helped shape them. Mr Nadella spoke warmly of Seattle, where he said he had spent 35 years, and of the Indian diaspora’s contribution to the city’s relationship with India.

He described a local culture in which people wore success lightly and valued doing more and talking less. The observation also provided a natural bridge to the gathering’s larger theme, bringing together technology leaders whose professional achievements have increasingly connected India and the United States.

Mr Kwatra, in turn, told the executives that their achievements were contributing to India’s development and standing. The connection might not always be tangible, he said, but it remained real.

Ideas4India brought together more than 40 Indian-origin chief executives and chief technology officers working across fields including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, aerospace and enterprise software. Organised as a follow-up to the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the gathering sought their ideas on technology cooperation between India and the United States.

The Seattle conversation therefore moved on two parallel tracks: one looking towards the technological possibilities created by AI and other emerging fields, and the other looking back at the values that shape those who lead. For Mr Kwatra, the memory of a three-month apprenticeship decades earlier offered a simple formulation of that connection: leadership is not merely about directing people, but about helping them internalise the discipline and character that guide their choices.
