The names Gajadhar and Boriel conjure up richness in intellect and property in St. Lucia. Heraldine Gajadhar was the first Minister for Social Services, followed by Ministers Bruce Williams and Guy Joseph, the current Minister for Economic Development, Housing, Urban Renewal, Transport and Civil Aviation. The Boriel families of Vieux-Fort (South of St. Lucia) have been the land and business magnates. Besides, there are a number of Indian doctors and professionals in St. Lucia working in the Government and private sector. There are a few Sindhi businessmen who are in imports, trading and duty free shops. There are three diaspora-owned offshore campuses of medical colleges in St. Lucia where most of the faculty members and students are either American/Canadian nationals of Indian origin or Indian nationals; namely Spartan Health Sciences University (SHSU), American International Medical University (AIMU) and International American University (IAU) where over 300 Indian students are pursuing medicine. The Indian Cultural Foundation promotes Indian culture in St. Lucia along with other organisations.
