In a visit rich with symbolism and strategy, Angolan President Joao Lourenco’s arrival in India marks 40 years of diplomatic ties and a renewed push for deeper cooperation
Major agreements signed
The talks resulted in several key agreements, including Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in traditional medicine (Ayurveda), agriculture, and cultural cooperation for the period 2025–2029. Angola also became the 123rd member of the International Solar Alliance by signing its Framework Agreement.
India approved a $200 million Line of Credit for the procurement of defence equipment for Angola’s armed forces. PM Modi also proposed Indian support in defence training, platform overhaul, and capacity building. “We have decided to expand our energy partnership. India is one of the largest buyers of Angola’s oil and gas,” he noted.
India also invited Angola to join its flagship global initiatives such as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Big Cat Alliance, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
Strategic focus areas
Both leaders committed to enhancing cooperation in critical sectors including:
- Defence and Maritime Security: First-ever India-Africa Naval Maritime Exercise conducted recently.
- Digital Infrastructure and Space: India offered technological expertise in digital public infrastructure and space tech.
- Education and Health: India has helped set up vocational training centres in eight African countries.
- Trade and Investment: India-Angola trade reached $4.19 billion in FY 2023–24.
President Lourenco called for direct participation of Indian investors in Angola’s growing economy, identifying priority sectors such as energy, agriculture, mineral resources, IT, finance, and education. Energy cooperation remains a key pillar of the relationship, with India being one of the largest buyers of Angolan oil and gas. Both leaders agreed to strengthen collaboration in critical minerals, healthcare, fertilisers, and digital public infrastructure.
