Strategic Ties
In a visit rich with symbolism and strategy, Angolan President Joao Lourenco’s arrival in India marks 40 years of diplomatic ties and a renewed push for deeper cooperation
People-to-people and cultural exchange
Recognizing the cultural affinity between the two nations, PM Modi announced a youth exchange programme to boost people-to-people ties. He also noted the growing popularity of Yoga and Bollywood in Angola as symbols of India’s soft power. An agreement on cultural cooperation will further enhance exchanges in art, music, and heritage preservation.
Shared stance on global issues
Both nations reaffirmed their shared positions on international issues, especially terrorism. PM Modi expressed gratitude to President Lourenco for Angola’s solidarity following the Pahalgam terror attack. “India is committed to taking firm action against terrorism and thanks Angola for standing with us,” he said.
PM Modi highlighted India’s expanding engagement across Africa, noting the opening of 17 new embassies on the continent in the past decade, along with over $12 billion in credit lines and $700 million in grants. Angola, he said, is a “partner in progress” and a pillar of India’s Global South vision.
