Excellency, how would you describe the current state of Seychelles–India relations?

For decades, Seychelles and India have enjoyed a strong and multifaceted bilateral relationship underscored by shared strategic interests in the Indian Ocean Region and a commitment to mutual development.

The relationship is marked by deep cooperation in various areas such as defense, maritime security, sustainable development, capacity-building, culture, among others, and it keeps growing.

Defense and maritime security constitute one of the bilateral partnership areas. India’s support in maritime capabilities through provision of vessels and equipment, naval deployments, professional exchanges, and joint exercises, among others, is ongoing. The various calls of Indian naval vessels at Victoria Port are in line with Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision for ensuring the Indian Ocean as a peaceful region.

Regarding Sustainable Development and Blue Economy, the two nations explore opportunities to enhance collaboration on blue economy initiatives. India supports Seychelles’ efforts in marine innovation, including renewable ocean energy, sustainable aquaculture, desalination technologies, and marine biotechnology. The Blue Technology Incubator initiative reflects Indian commitment to sustainable ocean governance.

High-level exchanges have also solidified bilateral ties. The official visit of Vice President Ahmed Afif to India in June 2024 highlighted the importance of political dialogue in advancing mutual goals. His meeting with the President of the Republic of India, Honorable Smt. Droupadi Murmu emphasized cooperation in areas such as defense, capacity building, and sustainable development.

Thus, India and Seychelles relationship is based on a warm and enduring base founded on mutual respect, strategic convergence, and developmental cooperation.

Looking ahead, both countries are poised to deepen their engagement through joint efforts to promote regional security, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability in the Indian Ocean Region.
