Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s multi-dimensional visit to Sweden and Norway has signalled a significant expansion in India’s engagement with the Nordic region, bringing together political dialogue, economic cooperation, innovation partnerships, sustainability initiatives and cultural outreach under a single evolving framework. Spread across high-level bilateral meetings, the 3rd India-Nordic Summit, business interactions and diaspora engagements, the visit in May reflected India’s growing confidence in engaging with Northern Europe not merely as a trade partner, but as a key collaborator in shaping future technologies, green growth models and emerging geopolitical conversations.

The visit unfolded against the backdrop of rapidly changing global dynamics, including continuing conflicts in Europe and West Asia, intensifying conversations around climate transition, supply chain diversification, energy security and the increasing strategic relevance of the Arctic region. Within this wider international setting, India’s outreach to the Nordic nations appeared carefully calibrated, balancing diplomacy, economics, sustainability, innovation and soft power.

At the centre of the Norway leg was the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, where Mr Modi joined the leaders of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland for wide-ranging discussions on innovation, clean energy, digital transformation, blue economy, defence cooperation and global governance reform. The Summit marked another important step in institutionalising India’s engagement with the Nordic bloc following earlier summits in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022.

Addressing the Summit, Mr Modi underlined that India and the Nordic countries shared common democratic values, respect for the rule of law and a commitment to multilateralism. He stated that in a period marked by geopolitical tensions and uncertainty, India and the Nordic nations would continue working together to uphold a rules-based international order.

Referring to global conflicts, Prime Minister Modi said India would continue supporting peaceful resolutions and diplomatic dialogue. He also stressed the urgent need for reforms in multilateral institutions and reiterated a firm and united position against terrorism.

“Our shared commitment to democracy, rule of law and multilateralism make us natural partners,” PM Modi said while addressing the media after the Summit.
