“Come And See Ecuador”

Ecuador and India are entering a new phase in their bilateral relationship. In this wide-ranging conversation, H.E. Mr Fernando Bucheli, Ambassador of Ecuador to India, speaks to Sayantan Chakravarty, Editor-in-Chief, India Empire, about the opportunities and challenges shaping the relationship.

Indian companies are already present in Ecuador in sectors ranging from pharmaceuticals and IT to automobiles, agrochemicals and engineering. What opportunities exist for a new generation of Indian companies to invest in Ecuador, and which sectors would receive the strongest encouragement from your Government?

India’s corporate presence in Ecuador is already more diverse than many people realize, and this gives us a strong foundation on which to build.

Tata Consultancy Services demonstrates the possibilities in technology and digital services. UPL has developed an important presence in agriculture and crop solutions. In the automotive sector, Indian brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Hero demonstrate the growing relevance of Indian manufacturing and mobility solutions to the Ecuadorian market. There are also Indian companies operating or exploring opportunities in pharmaceuticals, engineering and other sectors.

What I would now like to see is the next generation of this engagement: not only more Indian products reaching Ecuador, but greater Indian investment, technology transfer and long-term corporate presence.

Healthcare and pharmaceuticals remain obvious areas, but I would also highlight information technology, digital services, renewable energy, mining and critical minerals, automotive and e-mobility, agribusiness, infrastructure and engineering.

Ecuador offers several advantages: a dollarised economy, access to the Pacific, significant natural resources, strong agricultural capabilities and a strategic location on the western coast of South America.

My message to Indian companies is therefore: do not look at Ecuador only as a destination for exports. Look at it as a potential investment platform from which to develop a wider regional presence.

We would particularly welcome investments that introduce technology, generate employment, strengthen local capabilities and create value within Ecuador.

Healthcare and pharmaceuticals have emerged as important areas of India-Ecuador cooperation. Given India’s strength in affordable medicines, medical technology and healthcare services, what kind of deeper partnership would Ecuador like to develop with India in this field?

Healthcare has become one of the most promising areas of our relationship because it can produce very tangible benefits for citizens.

During 2026, Ecuador and India significantly intensified their dialogue on access to quality medicines at competitive prices. An Ecuadorian technical mission travelled to New Delhi in June and worked directly with Indian counterparts to examine available products, supply conditions and possible modalities of cooperation.

But I believe we should think beyond individual purchases. India possesses an extraordinary healthcare ecosystem: pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biotechnology, medical devices, telemedicine, hospital services and digital health. We should explore technology transfer, professional training, research and, where economically viable, local packaging or production.

India has also demonstrated solidarity with Ecuador through donations of medicines. What we should now build is a sustainable institutional and commercial relationship in healthcare.

If cooperation with India can help Ecuador provide high-quality medicines and healthcare solutions more efficiently and affordably, citizens themselves will understand the value of the bilateral relationship.
