“Come And See Ecuador”

Ecuador and India are entering a new phase in their bilateral relationship. In this wide-ranging conversation, H.E. Mr Fernando Bucheli, Ambassador of Ecuador to India, speaks to Sayantan Chakravarty, Editor-in-Chief, India Empire, about the opportunities and challenges shaping the relationship.

Finally, Your Excellency, if you were to invite Indian business leaders, investors and policymakers to look at Ecuador with fresh eyes, what would you tell them about the Ecuador of 2026 and the opportunities they might be missing?

Ecuador is a dollarized Pacific economy with remarkable biodiversity, significant agricultural and mineral resources, renewable-energy potential and privileged access to South America. Under President Daniel Noboa, the country is actively seeking international investment, new markets, technology and productive partnerships.

For Indian companies, opportunities exist in pharmaceuticals, technology, renewable energy, mining and copper, automobiles and e-mobility, agriculture, food processing, infrastructure and digital services.

But I would also tell them something less statistical: come and see Ecuador.

Visit Quito and the Andes. See Guayaquil and our Pacific coast. Discover the Amazon and Galápagos. Meet our entrepreneurs and young people. Taste Ecuadorian cacao and understand why its history began thousands of years ago.

India and Ecuador are geographically distant, but economically they are increasingly complementary.

The opening of India’s Embassy in Quito, the renewed dialogue on a trade agreement, our growing cooperation in healthcare, technology, energy and education, and the strengthening of institutional mechanisms such as Political Consultations and JETCO are creating a window of opportunity.

My message to Indian business leaders would therefore be very simple: do not wait until Ecuador becomes obvious. Discover it while the opportunities are still emerging.

The most interesting partnerships are often built before everybody else recognises their potential.
